With the trade deadline coming up, the Nets can make some big moves to help their future. Michael Porter Jr has been playing out of his mind and is on track to be an All-Star. Usually, a franchise would be thrilled with this. Here’s the problem, though. The average age of the Nets roster is about 23.3 years old. This is the youngest in the NBA. MPJ is the clear star of this team, but the issue is that he is 27 years old. Don’t get me wrong, MPJ is an amazing player, but he is not the type to play at an All-Star level till he’s 35.

A player’s prime is when they reach their peak performance. According to Dartmouth Sports Analytics, the average NBA player’s prime occurs between the ages of 27 and 29. Nets rookies Egor Dёmin and Danny Wolf have shown very high upside in their rookie season. Egor is 19 years old, and Wolf is 21. Let’s just say Dёmin hits his prime at 27 and Danny Wolf hits his prime at 29. MPJ would be 35. The timelines just don’t add up. Other Nets players with high upside are Drake Powell (20) and Noah Clowney (21). It doesn’t make sense to keep him while he is in his prime. Let’s be honest, the most wins you’re getting with Michael Porter Jr as your star is 25 at most. The best option is to trade him at the deadline while his value is high. So here are three trade ideas to move MPJ and continue to build for the future.

Trade 1

Nets receive:

  • Anfernee Simons (Expiring contract)
  • Sam Hauser
  • Xavier Tillman
  • 2026 1st round pick
  • 2030 1st round pick
  • 2031 First round pick

Celtics receive:

  • Michael Porter Jr
  • 2032 1st round pick
  • 2031 2nd round pick
  • 2031 2nd round pick

The Nets benefit from this trade because they get an expensive expiring contract (Anfernee Simmons) that they can choose to resign for the future or free up cap space for free agency. The Nets also get two effective role players who can be valued on the trade market. Last, the Nets get three future 1st round picks for their rebuild; these picks can also be significant trade assets.

The Celtics benefit from this trade because they are getting an all-star caliber player in Michael Porter Jr, who will help them make a deep playoff run. The Celtics have been dominant on the defensive end, but aside from Jaylen Brown, they don’t have another true scorer. This will improve their offense, and adding Ziaire Williams will replace Sam Hauser’s shooting.

Trade 2

Nets receive:

  • R.J. Barrett
  • Ochai Agbaji (Expiring contract)
  • Gradey Dick
  • Ja’Kobe Walter
  • 2026 1st round pick: Top 4 protected

Raptors receive

  • Michael Porter Jr
  • Ziaire Williams
  • 2028 2nd round pick
  • 2028 2nd round pick

The Nets benefit from this trade because they get an elite scorer in RJ Barrett, and young talent in Gradey Dick and Ja’kobe Walter. Also, Ochai Agbaji has an expiring contract, which can free up cap space. Brooklyn’s rookies are mostly guards, so this trade gives the Nets young talent at the forward position. Overall,l this move prepares the Nets for the future.

The Raptors benefit from this trade because it helps them prepare for their first playoff run with this group. Scottie Barnes and Brandon Ingram are not enough to make a deep playoff run. Michael Porter Jr would be the final scoring piece they need to compete in the playoffs. MPJ also has post-season experience. Additionally, Ziaire Williams replaces Gradey Dick’s shooting. This trade prepares the Raptors for their first playoff appearance with their young roster.

Trade 3

Nets receive

  • Terry Rozier (Expiring contract)
  • Davion Mitchell
  • Simone Fontecchio (Expiring contract)
  • 2026 1st round pick (MIL)
  • 2029 1st round pick (MIA)

Heat receive

  • Kyle Kuzma
  • Bobby Portis
  • Gary Trent Jr

Bucks receive

  • Michael Porter Jr
  • Ziaire Williams

This trade benefits the Nets because they get Terry Rozier’s expensive expiring contract and Simone Fontecchio’s expiring contract. They also get a valuable trade piece in Davion Mitchell. A championship contender would be willing to give a lot for him. Last, they get two future 1st-rounders that can be important for their rebuild. This trade helps the Nets prepare for the future and frees up cap space. The Nets would not plan to keep him; they just want his expiring contract.

This trade benefits the Heat because they acquire key defensive pieces to fill out their roster for the playoffs. The Heat average the fifth most points per game as a team this season, but average 118 points against them. Bobby Portis and Kyle Kuzma’s size will help them on defense. These are all benefits that do not have a huge effect on the team. The main reason the Heat would do this is to get rid of Terry Rozier. You might be thinking, why would the Heat give up a player who averaged 23 points per game just two years ago. Well, Rozier was recently caught gambling on his own games and is suspended indefinitely. According to SportingNews.com, the Heat are expected to waive Rozier ahead of Wednesday’s deadline. They would obviously be willing to get him something rather than nothing.

This trade benefits the Bucks because Michael Porter Jr. is a strong scorer who can shoot from the outside, which makes the offense much tougher for other teams to stop. He gives Giannis another reliable teammate to create plays and score with. Ziaire Williams is young and athletic, with lots of potential to improve, giving the Bucks a promising player for the future. Overall, the team boosts its scoring now while also adding someone who could become an important player later. The Bucks’ season has been a nightmare; they are sitting at the eleventh seed in the East. They have to make a trade to turn their season around. Trading for a low-end all-star is their best bet. It’s risky, but it can work out in the end.

Overall, each of these trades has the same objective for the Nets. Free up cap space, acquire draft picks, and bring in young stars for the future. The deadline will be interesting, and I can’t wait to see the moves Sean Marks makes.
